Handy Tips for Maximum Results on Aerosol Toners

Surface Preparation:
  • This product is formulated for application over dry finishes only.
  • All wood surfaces must be dry, clean and free of all contaminants.
  • A final top coat is required for protection and durability.

Application:
Do:
  • Use over lacquer-based finishes.
  • Apply over a clear finish.
  • Hold can approximately 12-18 inches from the surface and lightly spray toner over the area.
  • Allow at least 5 minutes of dry time for each layer.
  • Apply several layers of color for best results.
  • After desired look is achieved, apply a final top coat.

Don't:
  • Apply heavy or wet coats; this could result in color separation or a painted look that will cover the natural wood grain.
  • Do not apply to raw wood.

Dry Time:
  • Relative humidity will affect the speed of drying.
  • Dry time will be faster at higher temperatures and lower humidity.  Dry time will be slower at colder temperatures and higher humidity.

Problem Solving:
  • Color separation: May be the result of spraying too heavily or closely.
  • Clabbering: Indicates a chemical reaction or incompatibility.
  • Gummy streaks or runs: Could be teh result of inadequate dry time between coats or too heavy coats.
Tricks of the Trade:
  • This toner is designed to be used in a lacquer system.
  • To spot test, lay a piece of clear glass on the surface to be toned and spray a light coat or use the WFS Color System.  This will give a representation of the final results.
